Third-party data licences
The data served by the TerraLab API and MCP server comes from public bodies, research institutes and open communities. Each dataset keeps its own licence. This page sums up what each licence asks of you when you share or publish the data.
Last updated 24 October 2026
Every response and every file names the source and licence of its data. Files carry the notice in their metadata, in a licence column (CSV) or in a LICENCE.txt file (zip). That notice is the reference for a given dataset; this page is a summary, not legal advice.
TerraLab claims no ownership of this data and adds no restriction to it. You may use it for commercial work under all the licences below.
Using the data inside your organisation needs nothing. The obligations below apply when you share or publish the data, or work derived from it.
What to do when you share the data
| Licence | When you share or publish |
|---|---|
| CC BY 4.0174 | Credit the source named in the file, link the licence and say that you changed the data. |
| ODbL 1.0 (OpenStreetMap, Overture Maps)18 | Credit "© OpenStreetMap contributors" and the other sources named in the file, and keep the link to the ODbL. A shared extract stays under the ODbL. If you merge it with other data and publish the result as data, the result is under the ODbL too and must be offered on the same terms. A map or image made from it only needs the credit. |
| CC BY 3.0 IGO25 | Credit the source as the file names it, link the licence, mark your changes, and do not suggest that the United Nations or another organisation endorses your use. |
| Licence Ouverte 2.0 (Etalab) and 1.023 | Name the source and the date of its last update. Do not suggest that the French State endorses your use. |
| Datenlizenz Deutschland Namensnennung 2.013 | Name the provider, "dl-de/by-2-0" with its link, and mark the data as changed. |
| Open Government Licence v3.0 (UK)9 | Keep the notice in the file, for example "Contains OS data © Crown copyright and database right", and link the licence. |
| CC BY 3.08 | Credit the source, include the licence link with every copy and mark your changes. |
| Copernicus (Sentinel, Land Monitoring Service, WorldCover)7 | Keep the Copernicus notice, for example "Contains modified Copernicus Sentinel data [year]". Do not suggest that the European Union endorses your use. |
| Copernicus DEM (elevation)1 + elevation tools | Keep both notices from the file: the credit ("produced using Copernicus WorldDEM") and the disclaimer. Your recipients must be bound by the same notices. |
| Polish geodetic data (art. 40a and 40c)7 | Keep the Polish source sentence from the file. |
| European Commission reuse (Decision 2011/833/EU)6 | Credit "Source: EC JRC/Google" and do not distort the original meaning. |
| swisstopo open data4 | Credit "© swisstopo". |
| Open Government Licence, Canada 2.02 | Keep the notice "Contains information licensed under the Open Government Licence, Canada". |
| CDLA Permissive 2.0 (Overture places)1 | Share the text of the licence with the data. |
| Apache 2.0 (Foursquare Open Source Places)1 | Include the licence and the full NOTICE file, and say which files you changed. |
| ODC Attribution 1.01 | Keep the notice "Contains information from ... made available under the ODC Attribution License" with its link. |
| Per-country licences (Overture addresses)1 | Keep the per-country source and licence listed in the file. Some countries require their own notice. |
| Other national licences (Mexico, Canada statistics, Hong Kong, Brazil, ESA CCI)5 | Follow the notice in the file. |
| CC0, public domain, dl-de/zero42 | Nothing is required. A credit is welcome. Do not attribute an AI answer to NASA or present a modified extract as the original. |
Data we do not serve
We do not serve datasets under share-alike licences other than the ODbL (such as CC BY-SA), nor datasets whose licence forbids commercial use or gives no rights to the people you share with.
Combining datasets
Combining data under the licences above is allowed. Keep the notices of every source in the result.
ODbL data cannot be combined with CC BY-SA data in a published database: the two licences each require the result to stay under their own terms.
