Privacy policy: Geo Viewer (GPX, KML & Shapefile Viewer and Converter)

Last updated: 23 October 2026

Geo Viewer is a browser extension published by TerraLab (terra-lab.ai). It opens, inspects and converts geo files (KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, Shapefile, GeoPackage, GPX, CSV, WKT).

Data we collect

The extension itself collects, stores, sells or shares no personal data and no usage data. It has no analytics, no tracking, no ads and no account. Your files never leave your browser. The only requests it makes are for map images (see Map tiles) and for the files you ask it to open.

Your files

Files you open are read inside your browser and stay on your computer. They are never uploaded to TerraLab or to anyone else.

When you ask the extension to open a file from a link (right-click menu, GitHub, Google Drive), your browser downloads that one file directly from the site that hosts it, as it would if you clicked the link. TerraLab does not see it.

Map tiles

To draw the map, your browser loads map images from the background you choose: TerraLab's tile server (tiles.terra-lab.ai and our storage at stterralabopendata.blob.core.windows.net), OpenStreetMap (tile.openstreetmap.org) or the French IGN Géoplateforme (data.geopf.fr) for aerial photos over France. Like any web request, these servers see your IP address and the map area requested. TerraLab does not use this information to identify you, and the extension sends nothing else with these requests.

Settings

The extension may remember your last choice of map background in the extension's local storage in your browser. It never leaves your device.

Permissions

  • Context menu: adds "Open in Geo Viewer" to links.
  • Active tab and scripting: when you click "Find geo files on this page", it reads the links of the tab you are on, once.
  • Site access: granted at install only for TerraLab's map storage (stterralabopendata.blob.core.windows.net) and public Google Drive files (drive.usercontent.google.com). For any other site, including GitHub, access is asked only when a site blocks a plain download of a file you chose to open.
