Privacy policy: Web Data to QGIS
Last updated: 23 October 2026
Web Data to QGIS is a browser extension published by TerraLab (terra-lab.ai), France. It finds the GIS services and geo files used by the web page you are viewing, previews them, and exports them to QGIS or to a GeoPackage file.
TerraLab is the data controller for the few requests described below.
Data we collect
None. The extension collects, stores, sells or shares no personal data and no usage data. It has no analytics, no tracking, no ads, no cookies and no account. Nothing is sent to terra-lab.ai except the map tile requests described below.
What the extension reads
- The page you are on. When you click the toolbar icon, the extension reads that tab once to find services and files (WMS, WMTS, WFS, OGC API, ArcGIS REST, tiles, geo files). It does the same on sites you chose to "Always scan" or, if you turned it on, on every site. The page content stays in your browser. It is not sent to TerraLab or to anyone else.
- The services listed in the panel. When the side panel shows the services found on a page, your browser asks each of them for its description (capabilities or service metadata) so the list can show layer names. When you open a layer, your browser also asks that service for a preview and a sample of its features. On ArcGIS item and dataset pages, and on open data portals (data.gouv.fr, CKAN, Opendatasoft), it also reads the portal's public metadata for that page (for example www.arcgis.com for an ArcGIS item). These requests go straight from your browser to the server that hosts the service, as they would if you opened the links yourself. TerraLab does not see them. That server sees your IP address and the request, under its own privacy policy.
- Downloads. When you download a layer, your browser fetches it from the hosting server in pages and writes the GeoPackage on your computer. The file is never uploaded to TerraLab.
- "About this layer" is computed in your browser from the metadata the service returns. Nothing is sent anywhere to make it.
Map tiles
To draw the preview map, your browser loads map tiles from TerraLab's tile server (tiles.terra-lab.ai) and fonts and sprites from our open data storage (stterralabopendata.blob.core.windows.net). These servers receive the standard information of any web request: your IP address and the map area requested. They may keep standard access logs (IP address, time, tile requested) for operations and security. The extension has no account and no identifier, so nothing ties those requests to you.
Stored on your device
Saved layers, your settings, the list of sites you chose to scan, and the layers found in each open tab. This stays in your browser's extension storage and leaves your device only if you export it yourself. Removing the extension deletes it.
Permissions
- Active tab: read the tab you are on, once, when you click the toolbar icon.
- Scripting: run the bundled scanner in that tab, and on the sites you chose to always scan.
- Storage: keep saved layers and settings on your device.
- Side panel (Chrome and Edge) or sidebar (Firefox): show the list, preview and actions.
- Site access: asked only when you choose it. "Always scan" asks for one site. "Allow" followed by a server name asks for that one server, when it blocks reading from the panel. "On every site", in Settings, is optional and off by default.
- Fixed hosts: tiles.terra-lab.ai and stterralabopendata.blob.core.windows.net, for the preview basemap only.
Remote code
None. All code, including the WebAssembly module used to write GeoPackage files, is inside the extension package. The extension downloads data, never code.
Firefox
The manifest declares data_collection_permissions with required: ["none"]. The extension does not collect or transmit any of the data types in Firefox's list.
Links to TerraLab
After you open a layer in QGIS, and in Settings, the panel shows a link to TerraLab's AI Agent for QGIS. It is an ordinary link. If you click it, terra-lab.ai learns that the visit came from the extension (the link ends in utm_source=browser-extension). Nothing about the layer or the page is added to it.
Changes
If this policy changes, the date above changes. A change that adds any data collection comes with a new version of the extension and a new notice in the store listing.
