About this tool
Your GIS layer on a GPS, in WGS 84. Free, and the files never leave your browser.
How the conversion works
- Choose the .zip that holds the shapefile, or the .shp together with its .dbf and .prj.
- The page reprojects to WGS 84 from the .prj, then writes points as waypoints and lines as tracks. A polygon becomes a track along its outline. A name attribute becomes the waypoint or track name.
- Download the .gpx and load it on a Garmin, in OsmAnd, Gaia GPS or any GPS app.
How each part is mapped
GPX 1.1, the version every device reads.
| Shapefile | GPX |
|---|---|
| Point, MultiPoint | One wpt per point. |
| Polyline | A trk, one trkseg per part. |
| Polygon | A trk along each ring. GPX has no polygon. |
| name attribute | The waypoint or track name. |
| description attribute | The desc. |
| Other attributes | Not written: GPX carries name, description, elevation and time. |
What it does not do
- Only attributes named name and description are written. Rename the field in QGIS first if your names are in another column.
- Without a .prj the coordinates are read as WGS 84.
- Files up to 50 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what people ask most.
Does my file get uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser tab. Nothing is sent, and closing the tab clears it.
My shapefile is in Lambert 93 or UTM. Does it work?
Yes, as long as the .prj is included: the page reprojects to WGS 84, which is what GPX requires.
Will my Garmin read it?
Yes. It is plain GPX 1.1. Copy it to the Garmin's Newfiles folder, or import it in BaseCamp.
What happens to my polygons?
GPX has no polygon, so each outline becomes a closed track. A notice says so after the conversion.
