About this tool
One placemark per row of your spreadsheet, ready for Google Earth. Free, and the file never leaves your browser.
How the conversion works
- Choose an .xlsx file or drop it on the page. The first sheet is read, its first non-empty row is the header.
- The page finds the coordinate columns by their name: latitude, lat or y for one, longitude, lon, lng or x for the other. A name column becomes the placemark name, the other columns become ExtendedData.
- Download the KML and open it in Google Earth, import it in Google My Maps, or add it in QGIS.
How each column is used
Header names are matched after lowercasing and stripping spaces and underscores, so Latitude, LAT and lat_dd all work.
| Column names recognised | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| latitude, lat, y, northing | The latitude of the point. Decimal degrees, WGS 84. A decimal comma is accepted. |
| longitude, lon, lng, long, x, easting | The longitude of the point. |
| name, title, label, id | The name of the feature. |
| description, desc, notes, comment | The description. |
| wkt, geometry, geom, the_geom | Well-known text for lines and polygons, used when there is no latitude and longitude pair. |
| Everything else | Kept as an attribute, named after the column header. |
What it does not do
- Only .xlsx. An old .xls workbook has to be saved as .xlsx (or CSV) first, from Excel, File, Save As.
- Only the first sheet is read. Move the sheet you need to the first position, or save it alone.
- Coordinates must be latitude and longitude in decimal degrees. Degrees, minutes and seconds in text, or metres in UTM or Lambert, have to be converted first with the coordinate converter.
- Formulas are read as their last saved value. Files up to 50 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what people ask most.
Does my file get uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser tab. Nothing is sent, and closing the tab clears it.
How do I import Excel coordinates into Google Earth?
Convert the sheet here, then open the KML in Google Earth Pro (File, Open) or in Google Earth on the web (Projects, Import KML file). Each row shows up as a pin.
Which column names does it recognise?
latitude, lat, y or northing for the latitude; longitude, lon, lng, long, x or easting for the longitude; name, title, label or id for the name. Case and underscores do not matter.
My file is an .xls, not an .xlsx. What do I do?
Open it in Excel and use File, Save As, Excel Workbook (.xlsx). Google Sheets works too: File, Download, Microsoft Excel. Then drop the new file here.
My latitude and longitude are swapped. Will it notice?
When most values in the latitude column are beyond 90 degrees, the two columns are swapped and a notice says so. Check the result on the map preview.
