About this tool
Your spreadsheet as a compact Google Earth file, one placemark per row. Free, and the file never leaves your browser.
How the conversion works
- Choose an .xlsx file or drop it on the page. The first sheet is read, its first non-empty row is the header.
- The page finds the latitude and longitude columns by their name, writes one placemark per row with the other columns as data, and zips the KML as doc.kml.
- Download the .kmz and open it in Google Earth, or import it in Google My Maps.
How each column is used
Header names are matched after lowercasing and stripping spaces and underscores.
| Column names recognised | Where it goes |
|---|---|
| latitude, lat, y, northing | The latitude of the point. Decimal degrees, WGS 84. A decimal comma is accepted. |
| longitude, lon, lng, long, x, easting | The longitude of the point. |
| name, title, label, id | The name of the feature. |
| description, desc, notes, comment | The description. |
| wkt, geometry, geom, the_geom | Well-known text for lines and polygons, used when there is no latitude and longitude pair. |
| Everything else | Kept as an attribute, named after the column header. |
What it does not do
- Only .xlsx, and only its first sheet. Save an old .xls as .xlsx first.
- Coordinates must be latitude and longitude in decimal degrees.
- No custom icons or colours: set them in Google Earth or My Maps.
- Files up to 50 MB.
Frequently asked questions
Short answers to what people ask most.
Does my file get uploaded?
No. The conversion runs in your browser tab. Nothing is sent, and closing the tab clears it.
How do I convert an Excel file to a KMZ for Google Earth?
Make sure the sheet has a latitude and a longitude column in decimal degrees, drop the .xlsx here and download the KMZ. Google Earth opens it with one pin per row.
KMZ or KML, which one should I pick?
Same content. A KMZ is the KML zipped, smaller to send by email. Google My Maps and Google Earth read both.
My coordinates are in degrees, minutes and seconds. Will it work?
Not directly: the columns must hold decimal degrees such as 47.2184. Convert them first with the coordinate converter, which reads DMS.
Is there a row limit?
Only the 50 MB file size. Google My Maps caps a layer at 2,000 features, Google Earth has no such limit.
