About this tool

Points as waypoints and lines as tracks, ready for your GPS. Free, and the file never leaves your browser.

How the conversion works

  1. Choose a .geojson or .json file, drop it on the page, or paste the GeoJSON text.
  2. Points become waypoints, LineStrings become tracks, a polygon becomes a track along its outline. A name property becomes the waypoint or track name, the third coordinate the elevation.
  3. Download the .gpx and load it on the device or in the app: Garmin, OsmAnd, Komoot, Gaia GPS, Strava routes.

How each part is mapped

GPX 1.1, the version every device reads.

GeoJSONGPX
Point, MultiPointOne wpt per point.
LineString, MultiLineStringA trk, one trkseg per line.
Polygon, MultiPolygonA trk along each ring. GPX has no polygon.
name, description propertiesThe name and desc.
Third coordinateThe ele value.
Other propertiesNot written.

What it does not do

  • Only the name and description properties are written; GPX carries little else.
  • A GeometryCollection is skipped and counted.
  • Files up to 50 MB.

Frequently asked questions

Short answers to what people ask most.

Does my file get uploaded?

No. The conversion runs in your browser tab. Nothing is sent, and closing the tab clears it.

Can I upload the result to Strava?

As a route: Strava, Routes, Create, Upload GPX. Not as an activity, because the points have no timestamps.

I drew a route on geojson.io. Can I put it on my Garmin?

Yes. Save or copy the GeoJSON, convert it here, then copy the .gpx to the Garmin's Newfiles folder.

What happens to my polygons?

Each outline becomes a closed track, and a notice says so after the conversion.
